"Behind the Lens" Part 22 - Pete Goss & Team Philips

29 March 2000. It was just after 7am when Andrew Preece and I were tucking into bacon and eggs in a roadside café just to the west of Plymouth. We were due to rendezvous with Team Philips at 10 off the Isle of Scilly so were killing a bit of time when Andrew's phone goes.
"Hi Andrew its Pete, listen I know I said 10 but you better get here quick, the bows about to fall off. We are off the"The line goes dead, Andrew and I just look at each other, what had Pete just said?
We leave immediately calling Castle Air to ready the helicopter, we are in the air by 8 heading towards the Isles of Scilly, we find the boat, make one circuit and the bow breaks off. Had we been one minute later we would have missed it.
Pete is perhaps best known for his heroic rescue of Raphael Dinelli in the Southern Ocean during the 1996 Vendee Globe. I did a lot of work with Pete over those years, and enjoyed every minute of it, (perhaps with the exception of delivering Aqua Quorum up the English Channel in a gale with James Boyd). A natural inspiring leader, and a hero.
